Flying Termites after rain

In the spring it is common to see flying termites after it rains. These flying termites are known as swarmers and they are known to come out of foundation cracks, tree stumps and out of the earth. They leave the nest to mate and start new termite colonies and breed. Rain and warm weather increase moisture levels and creates an atmosphere that is ideal for reproductive termites to grow wings and swarm.

Rain provides the water that termites need for survival. Water, warm temperature, and humidity trigger the mating process for termites. After spring or fall rain, thousands of winged reproductive may swarm from the colony, they are looking to mate and start new colonies. When they find new mates, they lose their wings and go underground to begin a new nest.

When the ground is saturated with rain termites infest homes, especially where foundations have improper drainage. Standing water in crawl spaces and wet insulation are conducive to termite infestation. Wood that is wet for extended periods may lead to a termite infestation when termites move into the damp wood.

Flooding can damage foundations and termites can gain access to homes through foundation cracks. Homes and other flooded structures are more prone to termite infestation.
